Chartership confirms that you have met the highest standards in both education and practice and it acknowledges your commitment to both professional integrity and the maintenance of this standard through continued professional development.

As a Chartered professional your advice and opinion is recognised and respected by both colleagues and clients. In addition, your Chartered status enables you to give evidence at public inquiries, where your professional opinion will be called upon and respected.

Most employers look for Chartered status, or a commitment to achieving it, as an indication of quality and professionalism when recruiting new staff, and will often restrict the management of larger projects and contracts to those in the organisation who are fully qualified.

To become Chartered you need to demonstrate in the Chartership exam that you:

• Display a systematic and critical understanding of landscape and environmental practice, including the part played by team-working; processes and procedures; organisations; and regulations in ensuring an efficient and professional service.
• Elucidate the responsibilities and duties of a landscape professional in the UK.
• Analyse projects that you have been personally involved in using a rigorous and critically objective exploration, considering all aspects of its design, management and procurement.
• Have at least general knowledge and understanding across the whole Chartership syllabus, and that you have experience of applying this in practice.
• Show an interest and enthusiasm for the profession, and the ability to manage your future learning in order to meet your lifelong learning and CPD requirements.
