Funding for new central London park

TfL has awarded a total of £220m for local improvements across the capital

Transport for London (TfL) has announced £220m funding package for Local Implementation Plans (LIPs) across the 33 London boroughs, including money for Alfred Place park – central London’s first new public Park in over a century.

In this year’s LIP funding awards, Camden Council received £6.7m. £4.3m of this will go towards its West End project, including the creation of Alfred Place park off Tottenham Court Road.

The wider £26m Tottenham Court Road plan, designed by Todd Longstaffe-Gowan Landscape Design (with lighting design by Spiers and Major) and masterplanned by DSDHA, includes making one-way streets two way, introducing protected cycle lanes, widening pavements, and planting up to 285 new trees. There will also be new public spaces at Whitfield Gardens, Princes Circus, and at the foot of Centre Point.

Plans are aimed at reducing congestion and pollution, preparing the Tottenham Court Road area for the expected increase in foot traffic when Crossrail opens in 2018.

Elsewhere in London, TfL has issued LIP funding for:

• public realm improvements at Archway
• greenways and quietways in Enfield
• pocket parks in Hamersmith & Fulham
• a greenways route along the Longford River in Hounslow
• a revamp of Beckenham town centre, Bromley
• public realm improvement in South Norwood, Croydon
• improvements to Mitcham town centre, Merton
• Romford market place, Havering
• improvements to public realm on Battersea High Street, Wandsworth.

Across the boroughs there has been an emphasis on safer cycling and walking routes.
