Give your feedback on proposals for historic area of city
Sunderland City Council has put its draft masterplan for the city’s Minster Quarter out to public consultation.
Minster Quarter lies to the north west of the city centre, between the ring road and the Bridges shopping centre, and includes listed landmarks such as the Empire Theatre, Sunderland Minster, two baroque public houses, and the Edwardian magistrates’ courts.
The masterplan aims to restore the historic importance of the area while creating a suitable gateway to the city centre with attractive streets, parks and squares.
Specific proposals currently include extensive public-realm works on the site of the former Crowtree leisure centre, reinvigoration of Town Park, creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment on St Michael’s Way, environmental improvements to High Street West, and an outdoor performance space beside the magistrates’ court.
The masterplan is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to producing a ‘step change’ in the quality of the city’s urban environment and follows recent improvements to Keel Square and High Street West.
Plans will be on display at the Minster, from 9am to 3pm each day, until 13 December. Council officers will be on hand to discuss the plans from 11am to 3pm on 8 December.
