December 2023 update from the group set up to review the LI Standing Committees

The Landscape Institute (LI) is making a step change in the way it works, to foster a culture of collaboration between the people that shape our organisation – including members, volunteers, Board, and staff.

Part of this work is being conducted through the Standing Committee Review Group, which was created on the recommendation of the Brown (Independent) Review. Its remit is to review the existing process for policy development and communication of technical advice to members, examine the functions of the Standing Committees, and their relationships to each other, the Board, and the Advisory Council. The Group is also reviewing how Standing Committees operate alongside LI staff, as well as developing updated, robust and workable Terms of Reference for each of the Standing Committees.

Following the decision to suspend the Technical Committee in July 2023, the Standing Committee Review Group is working on Technical Committee procedures, to enhance the positive volunteer and expert contributions that feed into reports and guidance. In the meantime, the LI is supporting the vital ongoing output of Technical Committee Working Groups.

The Board has invited the chairs of the Standing Committees, including the interim chair of the Technical and Research Committee, to join the Standing Committee Review Group, and carry out its work. It is a short-term task and finish group, with a remit to deliver recommendations to the Board of Trustees in spring 2024.

    Membership includes:

Chair: Deborah Nagan, Independent Member of the Board of Trustees

Members: Ian Phillips, Chair of the Policy and Communications Committee (PCC)

Chris House, Chair of the Education and Membership Committee (EMC)

Bill Blackledge, Interim Chair of the Technical and Research Committee (TC)

Jackie Sharp (Interim Head of Policy and Technical).
